Timber Flight Balustrades & Aluminium Stair Nosing

A flight balustrade is the raking balustrade that follows a set of stairs down — the panel that runs on the angle, as distinct from the level balustrade along a verandah or a landing. It is the part most people forget to order until the stairs are already standing.

Assembled on the angle, not cut on site

Heritage & Decorative Timber Products supplies flight balustrades assembled to suit your stair angle, so the balusters stay upright and evenly spaced and the rails arrive already raked. The BS1, BS4, BS5 and BS6 patterns are all available as flight-assembled panels, with either the HR1 or the HR2 handrail.

This is the whole argument for buying the panel rather than the parts. Setting out raking balusters on site means every baluster is a separate angled cut, every spacing is measured off a sloping datum, and any error compounds up the flight. Doing it on a bench in the workshop is what keeps the spacing even and the top line true.

Left hand and right hand

Flight balustrades are made handed. Standing at the bottom of the stairs looking up, tell us whether the balustrade runs on your left or your right. We make both, in LOSP treated pine and in Merbau.

Flight panels and 1200mm flight newel posts are available separately in the same two timbers, so a stair can be built up from panel, post and handrail to match the level balustrade at the top of it.

Aluminium stair nosing

Our aluminium stair nosing is fitted to the front edge of each tread, with non-slip tape applied in black. It comes as standard in our premium stair kits and can also be supplied on its own — worth knowing if you are re-nosing an existing flight rather than building a new one.

Timber, treatment and the guarantee

LOSP treated pine flight balustrades are made from timber rated H3, for outdoor use above ground. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, they carry our 25 year guarantee.

Merbau is a hardwood and is not covered by that guarantee. It is chosen when you want the grain to show under a stain or an oil rather than under paint.

What to send us

Five things: the total rise from finished ground level to the top of the deck; the going of your stair (240mm or 290mm); the number of treads; which hand the balustrade runs; and the finished height you want.

Balustrade heights and baluster spacings are set by the building code for your particular situation — the drop below, whether the stair is domestic, and so on. Confirm them with your builder or surveyor before you order, because a flight panel is assembled to a height and cannot be adjusted afterwards.

Product and ordering questions

Why buy a flight balustrade assembled rather than as loose parts?

Because setting out raking balusters on site means every baluster is a separate angled cut, every spacing is measured off a sloping datum, and any error compounds up the flight. Heritage & Decorative Timber Products supplies flight balustrades assembled to suit your stair angle, so the balusters stay upright and evenly spaced and the rails arrive already raked. BS1, BS4, BS5 and BS6 are all available as flight-assembled panels, with either the HR1 or the HR2 handrail.

Are flight balustrades left hand or right hand?

They are made handed. Standing at the bottom of the stairs looking up, tell us whether the balustrade runs on your left or your right. Both are made, in LOSP treated pine and in Merbau. Flight panels and 1200mm flight newel posts are available separately in the same two timbers.
