LOSP Treated Pine Stair Kits & Stringers

A LOSP pine stair kit is a complete outdoor flight, cut to your rise and delivered as a set of parts to bolt together on site. Of the three timbers Heritage & Decorative Timber Products builds stairs in — LOSP pine, CCA pine and Merbau — LOSP is the one to choose when the stairs will be painted and on show, and it is the only one that carries our guarantee.

What is in a LOSP kit

Stringers, treads in the number your rise requires, and a sawtooth centre support on any flight over 1200mm wide. Stringers can also be bought on their own, supplied with batten screws, treads not included — useful if you already have decking boards you want to use as treads.

Two goings: 240mm or 290mm

The going is the depth of each step. A 240mm going gains height in a shorter footprint and suits tighter spaces and steeper climbs. A 290mm going gives a shallower, easier gradient that is kinder underfoot and reads far better on the approach to a front door. Neither is better in the abstract — it depends on how much horizontal room the flight has. Both goings are made in LOSP: the 240 kits and stringers, and the 290 premium line.

Why LOSP, and why the guarantee is only on this timber

LOSP stands for Light Organic Solvent-borne Preservative. The protective chemicals are carried into the timber by a light solvent instead of by water, so the timber holds its shape and its machined edges and takes paint properly. H3 is the Australian hazard class for timber used outside, above the ground, exposed to weather but not sitting in soil — which is exactly what a set of deck stairs is.

Our 25 year guarantee covers external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground. It does not extend to CCA pine or to Merbau. If the guarantee is the deciding factor, LOSP is your stair.

Two things separate our LOSP stringers from stock treated pine. We treat them after manufacturing, so every housing, every cut and every machined face is sealed rather than left open at the ends. And they are cut from dressing-grade clears (DAR), not standard knotted H3 pine.

Sizes

Kits are made from 900mm to 5400mm wide. On a 990mm kit the internal step width is 945mm and the complete external width is 1035mm. Flights run to eighteen steps.

How to order

Measure the rise — finished ground level to the top of the deck or landing — and decide the going, how far the flight can project without crowding a path or a garden bed. Those two numbers fix the tread count. Then tell us the width, the going, and whether you want a complete kit or stringers only. Stairs are made to your rise, not to a template, so odd numbers are fine.

Finishing

Prime with two thin coats of oil-based primer before installation, wait at least 72 hours after delivery before painting, then topcoat. The treatment protects the timber; the paint protects the surface, and keeping the paint sound is a condition of the guarantee.

Use the outdoor stair measuring guide to record the total rise, available horizontal projection and required width separately. The stair calculator helps prepare an enquiry; confirm the final dimensions, structural requirements and installation with your builder before ordering. Include the material, kit or stringers-only choice and delivery postcode in your quote enquiry.
