Timber Gable Infills & Vents for Melbourne Homes
Choose between GI1–GI7 decorative infill patterns and six separate vent options. Infills are priced per lineal metre of width; vents are priced each. Include your gable measurements so the workshop can confirm the selected design and fit.
The gable is the part of a period facade read from furthest away, and a bare triangle of cladding up there undoes a careful restoration below it. Two products fill it. A gable infill is the decorative panel between the barge boards, made to order in seven patterns, GI1 to GI7. A gable vent is a smaller fixed opening that lets the roof space breathe and finishes the gable at once. An infill is also called a gable insert, gable fretwork or a sunburst; a vent is also called a roof vent, an air vent or a gable louvre.

What is a gable infill, and what sizes do you make?
The gable infills made by Heritage & Decorative Timber Products are the decorative panels that fill the triangle between the barge boards, and the range runs GI1 to GI7. No gable is a standard size, so no panel is: every infill is made to order to the span, rise and pitch of the gable it is going into. Infill is priced by the lineal metre of the span, with a minimum charge of 1.5 metres wide.
What are gable infills made from?
Our gable infills are made from 9mm ply. That is a difference from the rest of our external range, and it matters for one reason: our 25 year guarantee covers external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, so it does not extend to the ply infills. On a ply panel the paint film is the protection.

How do I measure a gable?
Three numbers order an infill: the span across the base, the rise to the apex, and the pitch. If the gable is irregular, or the barge boards are no longer straight after a century, send a template or a photograph taken square-on with a tape measure in the frame. Getting the pitch right is what stops the panel sitting proud at one end. Infill fixes to the barge and apex framing, and is simplest to fit before painting is finished.
What shapes and sizes are your gable vents?
Six standard vents:
- Round — 450mm diameter (GVRND450) or 600mm diameter (GVRND600)
- Half round / semi-circle — 720 x 420mm (GVHR)
- Hexagonal — 450 x 510mm
- Octagonal — 455 x 455mm (GVOCT)
- Square — 455 x 455mm (GVSQ)
A vent fixes into a prepared opening, or over a screened aperture where the framing does not suit a cut-out. To size one, send the width and height of the aperture, or the footprint if it is surface-mounted. State whether you need a decorative infill, a ventilation opening, or both: a cut pattern alone does not specify the roof-space ventilation your project requires. Confirm the ventilation requirements with your builder and use the gable measuring guide to record the opening and selected mounting position.

What are gable vents made from?
Our gable vents are made from treated pine, with flywire attached to the back to keep insects and birds out of the roof space. They are functional as well as decorative: the point is genuine roof-space ventilation with a period face on it. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our gable vents carry our 25 year guarantee.
How should gable work be painted?
Apply two thin coats of oil-based primer to all six faces before either an infill or a vent goes up. LOSP treatment carries solvents that an oil-based primer bonds with, so acrylic is not a substitute at that stage. Keep the timber dry, leave it at least 72 hours after delivery to acclimatise, then apply two or three thin topcoats and inspect annually.

Can you match an original gable?
Yes. Original infill weathers, warps or disappears in a later renovation, and we can reproduce the pattern from a photograph or a salvaged fragment. Ask about our timber-profile matching service. We can also supply matching gable finials and brackets so the whole gable reads as one scheme. Australian made, delivered Australia-wide. Call 03 9720 1996.
