Compare newels and request dropper prices →Three different things share this page, and they do three different jobs. A dropper is the hanging counterpart of a verandah post — it drops from the beam instead of standing from the ground. A newel is the heavy post that terminates a balustrade run. A corbel is a bracket that carries a shelf or a mantel. The standard dropper profiles described below are V1D to V4D; V5D is also available as a separate shop enquiry. Confirm the required profile and dimensions with the workshop. Newels have four listed size-choice entries. Droppers and newels are turned from LOSP H3 treated pine. The corbels are clear pine, which is a different material with a different answer on the guarantee.

What is a dropper, and which designs do you make?
A dropper hangs from the underside of the verandah beam and finishes at the bottom, rather than running down to the deck. You use one where a bay has no post beneath it — over a step, over a path, at a corner, or anywhere a full post would be in the way — so the run of turned detail carries across the frontage without a post interrupting the opening. The dropper designs made by Heritage & Decorative Timber Products are V1D, V2D, V3D and V4D, each available at 88 x 42mm or 112 x 54mm. The numbering follows our verandah post range, so a dropper can be specified to match the post design used in the same run.
What is a newel, and which designs do you make?
A newel is the post that terminates a balustrade — at the bottom of a flight, at a landing, at a change of direction, or at the end of a verandah run. It is heavier than a baluster because it is the post the handrail actually lands on and the point the whole run is braced from. Our newels are N4A, N4B, N5A and N5B, at a standard thickness of 88 x 88mm or 112 x 112mm and standard lengths of 1.2m, 1.5m and 1.8m. The A and B variants are different turned profiles at the same size, so you can pick the profile on looks and the size on the balustrade it has to finish.
What are droppers and newels made from?
Both are LOSP H3 treated pine, rated for outdoor use above ground. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our droppers and newels carry our 25 year guarantee. Prime and paint all faces before fixing — including the end grain at the top and bottom of a newel and the bottom of a dropper, which are the two places water sits and the two places people miss.
Do you make corbels as well?
Yes, turned and carved, and they are the exception on this page. Our corbels are made from clear pine, which is untreated timber — perfect for staining or painting as preferred, but not treated pine and not covered by the 25 year guarantee, which applies to external LOSP H3 above ground only. The full range, sizes and both corbel types are on our corbels page.
How do I order or match an existing one?
Use the period verandah component guide if you are unsure whether the original is a dropper, newel or baluster. Give us the design, the section and the length, or send a photograph of what you are matching — an old dropper or a newel out of an existing balustrade is enough to work from. Check the dropper and newel prices for the selected code and size, or ask about our timber-profile matching service. Australian made and delivered to your home or site anywhere in Australia.
