Need help matching your balustrades?

You do not need a catalogue code to ask for a quote. Send a photo, drawing or sample details with your measurements. The Bayswater workshop can review what you need and provide a written quotation.

What measurements should I send?
  • Width of each run, design code, quantity and small or big handrail choice.
  • Straight or angled run; include rise and run or angle for sloping work.
  • BS4 motif choice, plus whether you want assembled panels or kit components. Your installer must confirm site requirements.
  • Your delivery postcode and any access restrictions. If you do not have every measurement yet, tell us what you know.

Quote request only — nothing is ordered or charged when you enquire.

Choose slat, motif, turned or square balusters, then select your handrail and supply format in the shop.

These diagrams show the assembled designs with an HR2 rail. Select the rail size you need: small handrail 65 × 42 mm (HR1) or big handrail 85 × 65 mm (HR2). The selected product specification determines the supplied rail.

BS4 has optional motifs A–G. Level assembled panels are 900 mm high; specify your opening measurements and required installation height with your builder when requesting a quote.

Which balustrade patterns do you make?

Our balustrade range is BS1, BS2, BS4, BS5 and BS6 — five patterns, and there is no BS3. The gap is real: the numbering was never closed up when a pattern was retired, so a quote asking for BS3 will come back unmatched. BS1 is made up with slat balusters at 42 x 19mm; BS2 with 42 x 42mm balusters; BS5 with turned balusters at 42 x 42mm; BS6 with square dressed balusters at 42 x 42mm; BS4 is the slat panel with a decorative motif worked into it. The published balustrade layout uses nine balusters to the lineal metre. BS1, BS4, BS5, BS6 and BS2ASS assembled panels are priced by the lineal metre. BS2KIT retains its separately listed kit unit; confirm the selected product specification in your written quote.

Is balustrade supplied assembled, in kit form, or raked to a stair?

All three. Every pattern except BS2 is made three ways: assembled at 900mm overall for a level run; in kit form if you would rather set the panel out on site; and flight assembled, built to suit your stair angle. BS2 is offered assembled or as a kit. Assembled and curved panels are photographed in the workshop. BS1, BS4, BS5 and BS6 have the HR1 handrail or the deeper HR2 option. BS2 has no HR1/HR2 variant listed; confirm its rail specification before ordering.

What base rails, handrails and loose balusters go with it?

Our handrails are finger-jointed treated pine — HR1 at 65 x 42mm, HR2 at 85 x 65mm. The BR2ASL base rail, 65 x 42mm finger-jointed treated pine, sits under the balusters, and a FIL19A fillet at 19 x 12mm fills the rebate between them; the standard rebate is 19mm wide by 12mm deep. A wider FIL43A fillet at 43 x 12mm is available. Beyond HR1 and HR2 we run a further seventeen profiles, HR3 to HR19, for matching an existing rail. Balusters are also sold loose for repairs: SBA slat, 1m x 42 x 19mm; SQBA square dressed, 1m x 42 x 42mm; TB4-5 turned, 42 x 42 x 1000mm; and the AMBA-G motif baluster, 90 x 19 x 1000mm in motifs A to G.

What timber is our balustrade made from?

Our external balustrade, handrails and base rails are made from LOSP H3 treated pine. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our balustrade carries our 25 year guarantee. Custom sizes and other species are available on request, but a panel made in another species is not covered by the LOSP guarantee.

How do I measure a balustrade run?

Record the clear length of each opening separately, then total the spans for the patterns priced by the lineal metre: BS1, BS4, BS5, BS6 and BS2ASS. BS2KIT is a separate kit entry; check its listed unit and confirm the specification in your written quote. Note the finished height you want and whether each run is level or raking to a stair angle. Confirm heights, spacings and compliance with your builder or surveyor before you order.

How should balustrade be painted?

Apply two thin coats of oil-based primer to all six faces before the panel is fixed — LOSP treatment carries solvents that an oil-based primer bonds with, so acrylic is not a substitute at that stage. Keep the timber dry, leave it at least 72 hours after delivery to acclimatise, then finish with two or three thin topcoats.

Can you match an existing balustrade?

Yes. Send a photograph or a surviving baluster and we will reproduce the profile so a repaired section blends into the original run. Ask about our timber-profile matching service; we can work from a photograph, drawing or sample. See our timber handrails and matched profiles. Australian made, delivered to your home or site. Call 03 9720 1996.

What should a timber balustrade enquiry include?

List each opening separately, with its clear length, intended finished height and whether it is level or on a stair. Include the pattern code, assembled or kit preference, handrail profile where that option applies, and photographs of any existing rail or baluster to be matched. For stair runs, show the stair and connection points in the photographs rather than sending a total run length alone.

Our balustrade planning guide explains how to organise the measurements. Catalogue dimensions describe the product; your builder or surveyor must confirm the barrier height, spacing, fixing and structural requirements for your installation. Specify whether you need loose replacement balusters or a complete panel, and confirm the quoted unit: the BS2 price-list entries use an each unit, unlike the lineal-metre entries for the other panel patterns.

Curved balustrades: real workshop assemblies

The workshop archive shows how turned balusters and shaped rails come together in curved work. The photographs record the assemblies at workshop scale. Curved work needs a custom quote and setout for the actual opening; use the standard BS range to compare straight assemblies.

Several curved assemblies in the workshopUnpainted curved balustrade assemblies with shaped rails and turned details standing together in the workshop.

For a curve, include a drawing or the available curve measurements, photographs of the site and the number of sections. Confirm the final setout, material and fixing requirements for the actual job with the workshop and installer. The archive does not establish a universal size or compliance rating.

For a separately documented finished project, see the Oslo Hotel workshop and completed-building record, which identifies BS6 balustrade components. Those photographs are a different job from the curved work shown here.

Product and ordering questions

Does the balustrade arrive assembled?

Choose assembled panels, kit form or flight-assembled balustrading to suit a stair, where that option is listed for your pattern. BS2 is offered assembled or as a kit. Confirm the pattern, handrail size, finished height and level or stair application when requesting your quote.

What is the standard handrail rebate?

The standard rebate is 19mm wide by 12mm deep, and a fillet fills the rebate where it would otherwise show.

Can balustrade be made in another size or timber?

Yes. Custom sizes and species of timber are available upon request.
