Timber Window Pelmets — Ranges A, B, C and G

The shop lists A, B and C window pelmet designs with per-lineal-metre prices. Range G is a separate made-to-size enquiry. Choose the pattern and opening width, and confirm 150 or 200 mm internal curtain space before manufacture.

A window pelmet is the shaped board that runs across the top of a window inside the room, covering the curtain track and the heading of the curtain so you see timber and pattern instead of hardware. It is also called a curtain pelmet, a valance box, a curtain box or a cornice board. The window pelmets made by Heritage & Decorative Timber Products come in four ranges — A, B, C and G — fifty-three designs between them, at three heights, made to whatever width your window needs. They are interior joinery, fitted after the architraves and finished in with them.

Which pelmet designs are available, and how tall are they?

Our window pelmets run across four ranges, separated by height rather than by style. Range A is SA1WP to SA27WP at 270mm high — twenty-seven designs, much the largest choice. Range B is SB1WP to SB6WP at 400mm. Range C is SC1WP to SC8WP, also at 270mm — SC8 is included in the scale-profile gallery below. Range G is SG1WP to SG12WP at 440mm, the deepest we make. Width on all of them is as you require: the pattern is drawn out to your opening rather than cut down from a fixed board. Pick the range for proportion, the number for pattern.

What is the internal hanging space, and should I choose 150 or 200mm?

Internal hanging space is the clear depth behind the pelmet board, between its back and the wall, where the track and the curtain heading sit. Every one of our pelmets is made with either 150 or 200mm of it. The choice depends on your actual curtain hardware and fabric, rather than the curtain style name alone. Measure the projection of the track brackets and the space the heading needs when the curtain is stacked; confirm that the selected 150mm or 200mm internal hanging space clears both. A double track or deeper heading may need more space, so include those details with the window and return measurements before the pelmet is made.

Why do the pelmet codes match the frieze panel codes?

Because they are the same fretwork patterns. The design numbering runs across both products: SA1FW is the external frieze panel and SA1WP is the interior pelmet cut to that same pattern. The heights line up as well — A and C are 270mm in both, B is 400mm in both, G is 440mm in both. So a pattern from the verandah frieze outside can carry through to the pelmets in the front rooms. The guide to coordinating fretwork, pelmets and privacy screens explains the related codes and how to compare the pattern across different proportions. It also explains the pricing: pelmets are quoted per lineal metre off the same A, B, C and G rate table as the frieze work.

Is a window pelmet the same thing as a window canopy?

No. A pelmet dresses the inside of the window and hides the track. A window canopy is fixed outside above the opening and shelters the glass and sill from sun and rain. Only the canopy is made for weather, and plenty of houses want both.

How do I measure for a window pelmet?

Three things. The width to cover, usually wider than the window itself so the open curtain stacks clear of the glass — set the curtain out before you fix that number. The drop, which is the range you choose. And the return at each end, the short piece that turns back to the wall and closes the box off, which follows the hanging space you have selected.

What are pelmets made from, and does the 25 year guarantee cover them?

It does not, and that is worth saying plainly. Our 25 year guarantee covers external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground. A window pelmet never sees weather, so it is not an external treated pine product and the guarantee does not attach to it. Ask us to confirm the timber when you order. A pelmet is made to be painted or finished to match the architraves and skirting already in the room, so specify the finish alongside the size.

We also make pelmets to your own size and style. Ask about our timber-profile matching service. Australian made, delivered to your home or site. Call 03 9720 1996.
