Every price and size, with photographs and Add to quote →A corbel is the shaped bracket that carries the front edge of a shelf, a mantel or the end of a benchtop, and makes the support look deliberate rather than structural. A corbel is also called a console, a shelf bracket, a mantel bracket or a scroll bracket. Heritage & Decorative Timber Products makes seven, in two families: three turned corbels shaped on the lathe, and four carved corbels with relief cut into a solid block. They run from 222mm up to 440mm, and all of them are made from clear pine, for staining or painting as preferred.

What is the difference between a turned corbel and a carved corbel?
A turned corbel is shaped on a lathe, so its profile is round — beads, coves and fillets running down the length of the piece. A carved corbel is shaped instead by cutting relief into a block, so it reads as a scroll rather than as a run of rings. The way the two are quoted tells you how each one is oriented. Turned corbels are given as long x wide x deep, because the eye follows the length of the turning. Carved corbels are given as tall x face x deep, because what matters is how far up the wall it stands, how wide the visible face is, and how far it projects.
Which corbels are available, and what size is each one?
Turned corbels are No.7 (code COR7) at 440mm long x 88mm wide x 42mm deep, No.8 (COR8) at 395 x 88 x 42mm, and No.9 (COR9) at 365 x 88 x 42mm — three lengths of the same section, so a shorter or deeper shelf does not change the character of the run. Carved corbels are No.1 (COR1) at 380mm tall with a 90mm face, 85mm deep; No.2 (COR2) at 325mm tall, 90mm face, 80mm deep; No.3 (COR3) at 325mm tall with a 90mm face, 80mm deep, in a different pattern; and No.2S (COR2S), the small one, at 222mm tall with a 70mm face, 50mm deep. All seven are catalogue lines at those sizes; confirm availability when enquiring.

What timber are our corbels made from?
Clear pine — which means untreated. Clear pine is pine free of knots, which is exactly what you want on a piece seen close up indoors: it takes stain evenly, and there is no knot in the board to bleed through a paint finish. What it is not is treated timber. Because clear pine is untreated, our corbels are not covered by our 25 year guarantee, which applies only to external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, and they are not suitable for an exposed outdoor position where they will get wet and stay wet. If you need a bracket out in the weather, ask us — that is a different timber and a different product.
Where do timber corbels go?
Under the front corners of a shelf, under a stone or timber benchtop where it runs past its cabinet, either side of a range hood, under a mantel shelf, in a sheltered position under eaves, and either side of a fire surround. Our fire surrounds are supplied with a choice of turned or carved corbels from these same stock lines, so the bracket beside the hearth can be the one used on the shelving opposite.

How do I size and order one?
Tell us four things: the height, the projection you need out from the wall, the width, and what the corbel will actually carry — a floating shelf, a stone benchtop, a mantel. Proportion and load are separate decisions: no load rating is published here, so your installer must confirm the support and fixing required for the intended use. If you are matching an original, photograph it square-on with a tape measure in shot. Ask about our timber-profile matching service. Corbel prices sit on the droppers and newels price list, alongside the droppers and turned newel posts they share it with. Australian made, delivered to your home or site. Call 03 9720 1996.
