What size post does a verandah want?
This is the question worth spending five minutes on, because getting it wrong is visible from the street for the next fifty years. There are three squared sections in the range.
- 88 x 88mm — a single-fronted cottage, an entry porch, a narrow return down the side of a house, or a bay where the posts sit close together.
- 112 x 112mm — the everyday size across most Victorian and Federation frontages, and the one to default to if you are unsure.
- 135 x 135mm — a wide double-fronted facade, generous post spacings, or a beam that is genuinely carrying something.
That is guidance on proportion, not a load rating. If the post is structural, your builder or engineer sizes it, not a web page.
Lengths, and how to measure
2.4m, 2.7m, 3.0m, 3.3m and 3.6m, and every length is made in all three sections. Measure from the finished verandah floor to the underside of the beam, and remember the floor may fall away from the house — the post at the outer corner is often not the same length as the one against the wall.
One price across the five designs
V1 to V5 are turned from a common treated pine blank and share one stock code family per size, so at any given section and length they carry the same price. Pick the turning you like: the V3 is the one design that also comes as a V3B, and the V5 closes the range.
Timber and guarantee
LOSP treated pine, rated H3 for exterior use above ground. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our posts carry a 25 year guarantee. That guarantee assumes the post is painted properly and kept painted: two thin coats of oil-based primer on all six faces before installation, a topcoat over it, and an annual look for cracks or breaks in the film.
What else you will need
Post caps or capitals for the head, and — if your verandah has them — the matching V4D droppers that hang from the beam between the posts.
