Chamfered or fluted — what is the difference?
A chamfer takes the arris off the four corners of the shaft and throws a fine shadow down each corner. Fluting cuts shallow vertical channels into the faces, giving the post a stronger vertical rhythm. Both options use the same V6 shaft. Compare the detail with your existing posts or send a photograph so we can help you choose.
V6 sections and lengths
Three squared sections — 88 x 88mm, 112 x 112mm and 135 x 135mm — in five lengths: 2.4m, 2.7m, 3.0m, 3.3m and 3.6m. Every section is available in every length. Confirm the required section and structural suitability with your builder or engineer. The V6 is also listed as V6B and V6H on our verandah post page. If you want a turned shaft instead, the V5 is the last of the five turned Federation profiles; if the frontage is Victorian rather than Federation, the V7 column is the one to look at.
Timber: LOSP treated pine, H3
LOSP treated pine, H3 rated for outdoor use above ground. LOSP is a solvent-borne treatment rather than a water-borne one, so the timber stays dimensionally stable, holds a crisp machined arris and takes paint properly. That matters more on a chamfered post than on a turned one: a soft or furred edge is visible from the footpath. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, these posts carry our 25 year guarantee.
Choosing a length
Measure floor to the underside of the beam and allow for the base detail and any fall in the verandah floor. If you are replacing one post in an existing run, photograph the original square-on with a tape measure against it before it comes out — and prop the roof before you touch it.
Finishing
Two thin coats of oil-based primer on all six faces before the post is installed, then topcoat. Posts still need painting and the paint film needs keeping sound: the treatment protects the timber, the paint protects the surface.
