A verandah post is the one component where the difference between right and wrong is visible from the footpath. Get the section too light and a wide frontage looks spindly; get the turning wrong and a careful restoration reads as new. These photographs are here to settle the design before you settle the size.

What is in the range?

Compare turned and chamfered verandah posts, sizes and prices. The range includes turned and chamfered designs made from LOSP H3 treated pine in the Heritage & Decorative Timber Products workshop at Bayswater, Victoria.

V1 to V6 are available in 88 × 88 mm, 112 × 112 mm and 135 × 135 mm sections. V7 and V8 are available in 88 × 88 mm and 112 × 112 mm sections. Overall lengths vary by design and section; compare the verandah post range and individual price sheets before choosing. V6 is available chamfered or fluted.

Section is the decision people get wrong most often. The 88 x 88mm post suits a single-fronted cottage; on a wide double-fronted frontage the same post looks undersized, and the 112 or 135 carries it. If in doubt, photograph the frontage from across the street and send it through with the width of the verandah — we will suggest a section.

Why are they turned rather than machined square?

Because the original ones were. A turned post has a square base and capital block with the shaft turned between them, and the transition between the two is where a reproduction succeeds or fails. It is also why these posts start as solid stock on a lathe rather than as a moulded profile.

Can you copy a post I already have?

Yes — this is the core of the work. Send an original sample where practical, after your builder has safely supported the structure. If it is still standing, photograph it square-on with a tape measure extended alongside, and add close-ups of the turned sections. Note the overall length and the squared section at the base.

Ask about our timber-profile matching service. Quotes are free; send a photograph, drawing or sample and the required dimensions and quantity.

What do they need before they go up?

Two thin coats of oil-based primer on all six sides, before installation — including the end grain at the foot, which is the first place a post fails. As external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, our posts carry our 25 year guarantee. Australian made, delivered Australia-wide. Call 03 9720 1996.
