Timber Fretwork Prices — Internal, External & Components

Fretwork is priced per lineal metre of opening, not per panel, because Heritage & Decorative Timber Products makes every panel to the width between your posts. The components are the exception — those are priced each. The list below is in three parts: internal patterns, external patterns, and the individual pieces that make an external panel up. Fretwork is pierced and open; a frieze panel is a patterned band with a defined height and is priced on its own list.

See the internal pattern before requesting a quote. Our free internal fretwork visualiser lets you compare 19 HFR/DFR designs at your opening width and height in millimetres. It previews proportions, not prices or final cutting dimensions. External panels and assembled FRI designs are separate ranges.

Internal fretwork — hall arches

The internal patterns — the HFR and DFR ranges, plus the FRI1 Nouveau and FRI3 Sunburst designs — are hall arches. They span a doorway or the break between two rooms in a period house, and they are the single most effective thing you can do to a plain hallway. Nine internal codes are priced here: HFR1–HFR5, HFR8–HFR10 and HFR19.

They are made to size: you give us the width and the height, and the panel is made to it. Enter your required width in metres for an indicative price; the workshop confirms the finished opening and manufacture in your written quote.

Internal fretwork is built as an 18mm MDF insert in a clear pine frame — a different construction from the external range, and the reason the two price differently. MDF is the right material indoors: it is stable, it takes a paint finish perfectly flat, and it holds a fine pierced pattern that would be fragile in solid timber. But clear pine is untreated and MDF is not treated pine, so internal fretwork is interior only and our 25 year guarantee — which covers external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground — does not apply to it, on either count.

External fretwork — verandah panels

The FR range is the outdoor fretwork that runs between verandah posts under the beam. Eight designs are priced: FR1, FR2, FR3, FR4, FR5, FR8, FR9 and FR10. There is no FR6 and no FR7 — the gap is real and identical in every source we hold, so the range is written out in full rather than shortened to "FR1 to FR10", which would promise ten.

Straight or arched. FR1 is an arched design. FR4 is offered both straight and arched, and both with and without motifs — four combinations in all, which is why it takes four lines on the price list.

Kit or assembled. FR4, FR5 and FR8 are sold either as a kit of parts or as a finished panel. Everything else is supplied assembled. An assembled external panel is made 300mm overall in depth.

Motifs. FR4 can be ordered with a decorative motif set into the panel, in seven designs, A to G.

Components, priced each

If you are repairing a panel rather than replacing it, the pieces are sold individually: trenched rail, fillet, FR4 slats, FR4 motifs A–G, FR5 spindles, and the FR8 squiggle motif and squiggle slat. The arched bottom rails for FR1 and FR4 are priced per lineal metre — the FR1 arched rail carries a dental mould on both faces, which is why it sits at the top of the component list.

How to measure fretwork

For an internal opening, preview the fretwork pattern at your measured width and height. The visualiser includes nineteen internal patterns; the priced codes on this page are a smaller selection. Ask for a quote if your chosen pattern is not listed. Our internal and external fretwork guide explains which material suits the location, and the fretwork preview guide explains how to compare the proportions.

Post-to-post width is the number that matters most: measure from the inside face of one post to the inside face of the next. Take it at more than one height, because old posts bow and the gap at the top is often not the gap lower down.

For an arched panel you need two more: the side drop, how far the timber comes down alongside each post, and the centre drop, how far it drops at the middle of the opening. Those two define the sweep of the curve.

For a straight panel: width, overall height, and photographs of the pattern.

And if you can get the original panel down safely, send it to us. Copying the real thing captures the size, the pattern, the thickness and every heritage quirk that a tape measure misses. It is the surest route to a match on a house that cannot be replaced.

Timber and guarantee

External fretwork is LOSP treated pine, H3 rated for outdoor use above ground — as external LOSP H3 treated pine used above ground, it carries our 25 year guarantee. Internal fretwork is MDF and is not covered. Prime external panels on all faces, working the primer into every pierced cut, before they go up.

Free quotes. Send a photograph, drawing or sample for matching work. Australian made, delivered Australia-wide. Call 03 9720 1996.

For your enquiry, include the pattern code, clear opening width and height, whether the panel is internal or external, and whether you want a complete panel or replacement components. Add the quantity and delivery postcode. For an arched panel, include both the side and centre drops so the workshop can confirm the shape.

Product and ordering questions

How is fretwork priced?

By the lineal metre of opening, not per panel, because Heritage & Decorative Timber Products makes every panel to the width between your posts. The components are the exception - those are priced each. Enter your required width in metres; the workshop confirms manufacture in your written quote.

Is internal fretwork the same as external fretwork?

No. The external FR range is the outdoor fretwork that runs between verandah posts under the beam, and eight designs are priced: FR1, FR2, FR3, FR4, FR5, FR8, FR9 and FR10. There is no FR6 and no FR7. The internal patterns - the HFR and DFR ranges plus FRI1 Nouveau and FRI3 Sunburst - are hall arches, made to your width and height.

How do I measure fretwork?

For an arched panel you need two more - the side drop alongside each post, and the centre drop at the middle of the opening.
